Polis Urges State Supreme Court to Keep Cyanide Ban in Place

BOULDER, CO – Jared Polis today urged the State Supreme Court to keep the cyanide leach mining ban in place in Summit County citing the severe environmental impact of cyanide heap leach mining on aquatic wildlife in Colorado’s rivers and the potential contamination of Summit County water supplies. The ban is currently in question by the Supreme Court for its constitutionality.

“There is nothing unconstitutional about allowing people to live in a safe and uncontaminated environment,” said Polis. “Mining is a part of the Colorado industry and economy but must be done in a way that is safe to both people and the delicate ecosystem in Colorado rivers and streams.”

Polis, who was recently endorsed by the Sierra Club, is a strong advocate for environmental protection and has been outspoken in the past regarding the use of cyanide heap leach mining. Polis, who is the former Chairman of the State Board of Education, is running for Congress in Colorado’s 2nd congressional district, a seat being vacated by environmental advocate Mark Udall who is running to represent Colorado in the U.S. Senate.
